5 Ways to Prepare Your Kids for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session

Because happy kids = natural, beautiful photos

As a family photographer in Maple Grove who works with little ones every week, I’ve learned a valuable truth:
The best family photos don’t come from perfect smiles—they come from relaxed, happy kids (and parents!).

If you’re worried about how your child will behave during your session—you’re not alone. Every parent asks! But with just a little prep, you can help your kids feel comfortable, confident, and even excited about photo day.

Here are five simple ways to prepare your kids for a smooth, stress-free session—and set everyone up for success.

1. 🗣️ Talk About It Like It’s an Adventure

Set the tone early! In the days leading up to your session, talk about it like a fun family outing rather than a photoshoot.
Use age-appropriate language:

“We’re going to play in the park with a friend who takes pictures!”
“You get to dress up and have fun while someone snaps photos of us being silly!”

Avoid using the word “behave” too much—it can create pressure. Instead, focus on the fun parts: running, hugging, playing, or even getting a treat afterward.

2. 🧃 Pack Smart: Snacks, Water & Wipes

Even the happiest little ones can get tired, hungry, or sticky during a session.
Come prepared with:

  • Non-messy snacks (like fruit snacks, crackers, or mini marshmallows)
  • Water bottles to stay hydrated
  • Wipes or tissues for quick cleanups

Pro tip: Avoid chocolate or colorful juice right before the session—you don’t want blue lips or sticky fingers in your close-ups!

3. 👗 Let Them Help Choose Their Outfit

Kids love to feel involved!
If you’ve already picked a color scheme, give them a couple of pre-approved outfit options and let them choose what to wear. This gives them a sense of control and can help avoid meltdowns when it’s time to get dressed.

If they’re young, you can also “practice” taking photos at home in their outfit so it feels familiar on photo day.

4. 🧸 Bring a Comfort Item (Just in Case)

If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or toy, feel free to bring it!
Sometimes, just having it nearby (even if it stays in the bag) helps kids feel more secure. And if it ends up in a few photos? That’s okay. It tells the story of who they are right now.

5. 🌟 Go With the Flow (And Trust Your Photographer!)

The best sessions are the ones where families let go of perfection and focus on connection.
Kids will wiggle. They’ll make silly faces. That’s part of the magic. My job is to meet them where they’re at and gently guide them into beautiful, natural moments.

Some of the most cherished photos happen during unposed, in-between moments—like a tickle fight, a snuggle, or a spontaneous dance party.

Bonus Tip: ✨ Celebrate After!

Plan a little treat after your session—a stop for ice cream, a family picnic, or movie night at home. It gives kids something to look forward to and ends the day on a happy note.

Final Thoughts

Preparing your kids doesn’t mean making them “perfect”—it means helping them feel seen, safe, and supported.
When everyone arrives relaxed and connected, the real smiles come naturally—and those are the ones you’ll treasure forever.
